On-Campus Living
In a typical year, nearly 90 percent of first-year students decide to live in on-campus housing. It’s a smart decision: research shows that living on campus leads to better grades and higher graduation rates. The academic benefit is just one of the reasons thousands of new and returning students choose University housing to make the most of their Golden Gopher experience.
We offer diverse housing options across campus, including nine residence halls and four apartment buildings, each with its own neighborhood vibe and a team of professional and student staff dedicated to your student’s success.
We aim to have thriving and engaged communities where students feel welcome, respected, and supported as they expand their network, learn from new perspectives, and explore their goals.
Apply Early
Housing assignments are made based on the date of your student’s housing application first. Bonus! Application changes are accepted through May 15 of the following year, and updating preferences does not impact the original application date. Don’t wait until your student knows their admission status to apply. Applying early for housing puts your student in a better position to get one of their preferred buildings or room types.

Living on-campus is also a practical decision. Our residents have easy access to classrooms, libraries, dining halls, fitness centers, clinics, arts and cultural venues, parks, trails, and more—all a quick walk or bike/bus/lightrail ride away. We also have caring and dependable staff (including Residence Director and Community Advisors) who are available to help students navigate college life. Does your student need advice, a referral, or just somebody to talk to? We are here for them!
Wellness and safety efforts in our buildings and across campus are wide-ranging, and everyone has a role to play so all community members can live, learn, and enjoy campus activities with confidence. Our buildings are equipped with access-controlled doors, security cameras, on-duty staff, and student Security Monitors to help keep buildings safer.

University housing room and dining costs cover it all—unlimited utilities, laundry machines, high-speed wired and wireless internet, streaming TV, furnished rooms, study rooms, lounges, game rooms, music practice rooms, security, 24/7 Information Desk, tech centers and support, and more. Hungry? There are all-you-care-to-eat dining halls connected to six of our residence halls as well options across campus offering coffee, smoothies, pizza, and more. Students living in residence halls are required to have one of three convenient meal plans, which can be used at M Dining locations across campus. The wide variety of plans and food options ensures that you student will have healthy, balanced meals every day.
Discover Your Niche
Living on campus makes it easier for your student to make friends and become familiar with campus resources and opportunities. University housing also helps students become more involved in the college experience, seamlessly weaving classroom work with their goals and interests.
Students can also choose to live in one of over 30 Living Learning Communities (LLC)—a unique housing option to connect with other students who share similar interests, academic goals, and personal direction at no additional cost. LLCs bring students to live together in a dedicated area of a building. Some programs fill up fast so be sure to apply early.
Along with regular floor meetings, students can create their own housing group, volunteer in sustainability and health advocacy, attend a social justice retreat, and join student advisory boards. There are also a variety of paid positions in Housing and Dining for students looking to earn extra cash, gain valuable experience, make new friends, and provide outstanding programs and services for students. Roommates
Is your student concerned about roommates? They don’t need to have a specific roommate in mind before applying, and there are a few options. They may list a mutual roommate request on their application (be sure to check LLC requirements), our assignment team can match students based on the application questionnaire, or students can use our search system available in the spring before their first fall semester on campus.
Gender Open Housing is also available as part of our commitment to providing a safe, inclusive, and supportive living experience for all students. Gender Open spaces are reserved for those who would feel more comfortable living with someone outside of their designated sex and/or someone with similar gender identity, and students are only assigned to these spaces if they request it on their housing application
